Is Lagos over hyped over other Nigerian Cities?

Why Lagos Is Overhyped Among Nigerian Cities: Separating Myth from Reality.

For decades, Lagos has been marketed as Nigeria's "City of Dreams." It is the country's commercial capital, home to multinational companies, entertainment giants, and one of Africa's busiest ports. Every year, thousands of Nigerians relocate there believing that success can only be found in Lagos.

But is Lagos really everything people claim it is? Or has its reputation grown larger than reality?

This article is not intended to diminish Lagos' importance. Instead, it examines why many people believe the city is overhyped and why other Nigerian cities deserve far more recognition than they currently receive.

The Myth That Success Exists Only in Lagos.

One of the biggest myths surrounding Lagos is that anyone who wants to become successful must live there.

First, lagos is not the largest city in Nigeria by land mass, it's the sixth largest city in Nigeria. Though over populated which makes it the largest city by population. So you can say lagos is over crowded. The land mass is affected by water bodies that span globally one is the Atlantic ocean and the other is ogun River and the interconnected lagoons, then comes ologe river and Interconnected Cannal networks. All this water bodies affects the lives of the people living in the state. The state is popularly divided into two places, the Mainland and the island both of which are surrounded by water though the island as we know from Geography is the land between two water bodies. Lagos was the first capital of Nigeria so development came to lagos more than it came to Benin city. Benin enjoys thesame recognition as lagos due to it proximity to the coastline. Though maybe the people of benin didn't allow the white people to settle as the Lagos people did. Most of the areas in lagos states experienced a rapid touch of development like electricity, road and drainages. The uniqueness of lagos road is interlocking bricks that dont last over 6 months in waterlogged areas ofcourse which is the condition of most areas on the Island. If you visit some parts of the mainland, it will feel like you're in Bodesadu and not Lagos yet they're all hyped but you may have never heard of a place called bodesadu before.

While Lagos undoubtedly offers numerous opportunities, it is not the only city where businesses thrive. Cities such as Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Uyo, Enugu, Abeokuta, Ilorin, and Kaduna have growing economies, expanding infrastructure, universities, industries, and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Today, the internet has reduced geographical barriers. Many software developers, writers, designers, consultants, digital marketers, and online entrepreneurs work for clients across the world without ever living in Lagos.

Success depends more on skills, discipline, networking, and consistency than on a particular location.

The Cost of Living Is Extremely High.

Many first-time migrants quickly discover that Lagos is far more expensive than expected. The prices does not meet the reality. Houses cost more in lagos than in Los Angeles USA. Without a standard road network nor electricity. Buying a belgium car in lagos cost more than the price of that new car. Everything is inflated just to make the city look special of which is not. Lagos enjoy a better quality of air than other southern regions due to the coast but the humidity level in lagos is second to none in Nigeria. People complain of the north to be very hot but lagos is hotter only that when it's hot, you can sweat unlike in the north when it's hot, there maybe not sweat because humidity is always low. The north experience cold weather most times while lagos experience heat most times of the year.

Housing costs have increased significantly over the years. Rent in many neighborhoods can consume a large portion of a worker's annual income. Transportation, electricity, food, and healthcare also tend to cost more than in many other Nigerian cities.

Only in lagos an individual can afford a very good, clean car but cannot afford to rent a house. Only in lagos you'll see food vendors, clothes vendors, newspaper vendors selling their products in a nice car because they cannot afford to rent a shop. Having a car in my city is secondary after building your house. In my city, bike users have more houses than people using highlander jeeps in lagos. Yes they can build houses in my city but they cant afford the cost of building a house in lagos, guess what, price of sand, cement and rebar are relatively cheaper in lagos than elsewhere. Just as price of petrol has always been cheaper in lagos than elsewhere. In our next blog, we'll talk about how lagos people acquire the wealth they used in building luxuries, houses, clubs without producing anything. Look out for our next post.

It cost #800 to buy a sachet of panadol and #600 to buy a sachet of paracetamol as of 07/07/2026 in Lagos Island.

Someone earning a modest salary may struggle to save money despite working long hours.

Ironically, people earning similar incomes in smaller cities often enjoy a better quality of life because their expenses are much lower.

Endless Traffic Reduces Productivity.

Lagos traffic has become almost synonymous with the city itself.

Commuters can spend several hours every day moving between home and work. What should be a thirty-minute journey can become two or three hours during peak periods.

The consequences include:

- Lost productivity

- Mental fatigue

- Increased transportation expenses

- Reduced family time

- Higher stress levels.

Time is one of life's most valuable resources, and Lagos traffic consumes an enormous amount of it.

Population Pressure Creates Daily Stress.

With millions of residents and new arrivals every year, Lagos experiences constant pressure on roads, housing, healthcare facilities, schools, and public transportation.

This population density often results in:

- Overcrowded buses

- Long queues

- Competition for jobs

- Housing shortages

- Environmental pollution.

For many residents, everyday activities require significantly more effort than they would in less congested cities.

Quality of Life Is Often Overlooked.

Many discussions about Lagos focus solely on economic opportunities while ignoring quality of life.

Factors such as:

- Quiet neighborhoods

- Clean environments

- Short commuting times

- Affordable housing

- Better work-life balance

are often available in many other Nigerian cities.

Living in a calmer environment can improve physical health, mental well-being, and overall happiness.

Social Media Creates an Unrealistic Image.

Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube often showcase Lagos' most glamorous locations:

- Victoria Island

- Lekki

- Ikoyi

- Eko Atlantic

- Luxury restaurants

- Beach resorts

- Nightlife

These images create the impression that everyone in Lagos enjoys a luxurious lifestyle of which a combination of all this structures is not upto the size of wudil, a city in kano state.

The reality is different.

Many residents live in densely populated communities, spend hours commuting, and struggle with the rising cost of living, flood, dirts, communal clash, loud music, environmental pollution of sewage water, theft and immorality. Lagos is the centre for immorality as it is seen as the London of Nigeria. There are very few mosques for muslims and the mosques are deserted, no lous speakers are allowed but musics are played very loud in clubs and other businesses. Social media usually highlights exceptional lifestyles rather than everyday experiences.

Do not be surprised if you learn that your local government chairman or senator to your district or house of reps members or governor have a house in lagos. They couldn't build the kinds of house they're building in lagos in their own community so that people wont see where they're spending the resources meant for them.

Other Nigerian Cities Receive Too Little Recognition.

Several Nigerian cities have quietly developed into excellent places to live and work.

For example:

- Abuja offers modern infrastructure and organized road networks.

- Ibadan combines urban development with relatively affordable living costs.

- Uyo is known for its cleanliness and peaceful environment.

- Enugu has a growing technology and business community.

- Kano remains one of West Africa's largest commercial hubs.

- Ilorin and Abeokuta continue to attract businesses due to lower operating costs.

These cities may not receive the same media attention as Lagos, but many residents enjoy a comfortable and productive lifestyle.

Bigger Does Not Always Mean Better.

Lagos is Nigeria's largest city, but size alone does not determine quality.

A city should be evaluated based on factors such as:

- Safety

- Infrastructure

- Healthcare

- Education

- Cost of living

- Environmental quality

- Economic opportunity

- Ease of transportation

- Overall quality of life.

On several of these measures, other Nigerian cities compare favorably with Lagos.

Lagos Still Has Major Strengths.

Despite the criticisms, Lagos remains one of Africa's most important economic centers.

Its strengths include:

- Nigeria's largest business ecosystem

- Strong financial sector

- Entertainment industry

- International connectivity

- Diverse population

- Entrepreneurial opportunities

- Large consumer market.

These advantages explain why millions continue to relocate there.

The point is not that Lagos lacks opportunities, but that it should not be viewed as the only place where opportunities exist.

Conclusion.

Lagos is an extraordinary city with undeniable economic importance. However, its reputation sometimes creates unrealistic expectations.

For many Nigerians, the high cost of living, severe traffic congestion, overcrowding, and daily stress outweigh the benefits. Meanwhile, several other Nigerian cities offer strong economic prospects, lower living costs, and a better quality of life.

Rather than assuming Lagos is automatically the best choice, individuals should consider their career goals, income, lifestyle preferences, and long-term plans before relocating.

The best city is not necessarily the most famous it is the one that allows you to build a successful, healthy, and fulfilling life.
