ISTANBUL, TURKEY  A 15-year-old girl has allegedly attacked students with a knife at a middle school in Istanbul, Turkey, killing a 10-year-old girl and injuring seven other children in a shocking incident that has raised fresh concerns about school security.

The attack occurred on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, at Şeyh Şamil Imam Hatip Middle School in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul.

According to Turkish media reports, the suspected attacker was a 10th-grade student at another school who allegedly entered the targeted school wearing a uniform before attacking pupils aged between 10 and 13.

Turkish authorities confirmed that eight students were injured in the incident. One of the victims subsequently died despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life. The seven surviving victims were taken to hospitals for treatment.

How the Attack Happened.

The attack reportedly began at approximately 8:40 a.m. local time as students were at school.

Initial accounts indicated that the suspected attacker was not enrolled at the school where the incident occurred. She was reportedly a student at another secondary school in Istanbul.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said the teenager lived in the same neighbourhood and attended a different school. According to the governor, she entered the school premises wearing a school uniform before allegedly attacking the children.

The suspect was identified by her initials, F.M., in Turkish media reports.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the attack, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

10-Year-Old Victim Dies Despite Medical Efforts

The incident took a tragic turn when one of the injured children died while receiving medical treatment.

Turkey's Education Minister, Yusuf Tekin, confirmed the death, expressing sorrow over the loss of a student.

The victim was identified in subsequent reports as Eslem Sare Bulut, a 10-year-old girl.

The death has added to the grief surrounding the incident, with the remaining seven injured students continuing to receive medical care.

Initial reports indicated that some of the children had sustained minor injuries, while others were in more serious condition.

The authorities have not treated the incident as an ordinary school altercation. Investigations have been launched to establish exactly what happened, how the suspect gained access to the school and whether any security failures contributed to the attack.
